This is my annual diatribe about how we need an 8 team college playoff. There is no story, or clever lead-in. I am just going to spit straight facts. This year we will find ourselves in another quandary at the end of the season. I predict this year there will be more fan bases annoyed than usual. This is because there aren’t just 3 or 4 quality teams, there are about 7 or 8 teams who can win it all (Bama, LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, Oklahoma, Penn State, Florida, Georgia). Spare me the NCAA saying that these extra games take kids away from class. Look at the basketball year and how much they travel. Let us look at the NCAA Division II playoffs. The current format, in use since 2016, features 28 teams. The 28 teams are organized into 4 super-regions of 7 teams each, the top-seeded team in each super-region gets a bye during the first round. 28 teams! So, Division I would not be taking a crazy risk going from 4 to 8 teams, especially if they incorporate the first round into early bowl games. Think of the extra money the NCAA would generate from one more round. Maybe the NCAA doesn’t want more money. It might have enough. Haha, sure. There must be a mafia-like tie-in as to why this isn’t happening. I need answers!
Tough week last week but looking to rebound in a big way in this week’s picks. Let’s roll…..
Michigan +1 vs. Notre Dame – UM came alive in the second half against PSU. I am going with the home dog and giving Harbaugh one last chance to pull out a straight up victory against a good team for once.
Michigan 27 Notre Dame 24
TCU +1.5 vs. Texas – Weekly smelly line pick. TCU has lost their last two games and Vegas has the nerve to post this line against perennial media favorite, Texas. The purple uniforms are about to shock Joe Square.
TCU 31 Texas 28
LSU -10.5 vs. Auburn – Joe Burrow is on fire. Death Valley will be a tough place for freshman quarterback Bo Nix to play. Big Ed Orgeron will have the Tigers ready to roll at home.
LSU 38 Auburn 23
Wisconsin +14.5 vs. Ohio State – The Badgers dominate the game but lose to lowly Illinois. OSU is smashing everyone. Obviously the play here is Wisconsin. Suckers.
Ohio State 30 Wisconsin 17
Nebraska -2.5 vs. Indiana – Nebraska simply needs this win way more the Indiana does. IU is 5-2 and Nebraska is 4-3. This isn’t basketball. Get back to normal.
Nebraska 30 Indiana 24
East Carolina +2 vs. South Florida – ECU can get back to .500? Beat South Florida? Only a 2 point home dog? Vegas, I love you.
East Carolina 27 South Florida 24
Washington State +14 at Oregon – I think Oregon is the better team with a much better defense. I just think Mike Leach keeps his troops motivated to keep this one close.
Oregon 38 Washington 28
Michigan State +5 vs. Penn State – The Spartans have shown me absolutely nothing this year. Zilch. Of course they play an undefeated PSU and the line is under a touchdown. Vegas setting traps everywhere this weekend.
Penn State 24 Michigan State 20
Tennessee +4.5 vs. South Carolina – The Vols are slowly turning the corner. They are getting more and more competitive each week. I think South Carolina exhausted a lot in the past few weeks.
Tennessee 24 South Carolina 23
Miami Florida +5 vs. Pittsburgh – Pitt is one of those team where nothing comes easy. I can’t see them cruising to an easy win to move to 6-2. Miami due for a good game.
Pittsburgh 27 Miami Florida 23
UCLA +3.5 vs. Arizona State – UCLA is improving each week and the Sun Devils are starting to sputter. This might be a case of teams going in opposite directions.
UCLA 28 Arizona State 27
Season ATS record: 33-37
