Can We Find a David?

The biblical account of David and Goliath is one of most popular stories from scripture. It is a lesson of courage and overcoming what seems impossible. Many times, when a massive upset happens in sports, people will say that David once again slayed Goliath. A perfect example of this was in the 1980 Olympic Games when the US Men’s hockey team beat the mighty Russians. In college football, as of late, there have been far too little examples of huge underdogs unseating the top teams. It seems as though teams like Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State, and Georgia rarely get upended by a team in the lower half of the top 25, or for that matter, teams not even ranked. What happened to the good old fashioned epic upsets? The answer is recruiting is way too lopsided and the top 10 teams gobble up the 5 star talent, thus creating a very unbalanced playing field. My question is, can any team that is more than a two touchdown underdog step up and beat up one of the giants this year? Most likely, this won’t happen. However, if David can defeat Goliath, maybe NC State can beat Clemson!

Another winning week brings me to .500 for the year ATS. Time to get in the black for the year. Looking forward to another week filled with wins. Let’s get it!

Florida State -6.5 vs. NC State – QB might be a bit of an issue for FSU but nowhere near the problem NC State has with Dave Doeren’s reluctance to pull the trigger and change QBs. NC State also has a banged up secondary and overall is just a young team. FSU has lost the last two games against the Wolfpack and will come into this one angry. Cam Akers rushes for 200 yards.

Florida State 34 NC State 27

Michigan -27.5 vs. Rutgers – Michigan got embarrassed last week and everyone is saying Harbaugh should be fired. I am not saying they are wrong, but I expect a big bounce back and the Rutgers QB is doubtful.

Michigan 42 Rutgers 10

Alabama -37.5 vs. Mississippi – Saban sometimes takes his foot off the pedal against non-conference cupcakes. Not so much in the SEC.

Alabama 52 Mississippi 13

Purdue +2 vs. Minnesota – I like PJ Fleck. I just don’t see Minnesota going to 4-0 on a conference away game.

Purdue 28 Minnesota 27

Nebraska +17.5 vs. Ohio State – The Huskers are due to show up sometime soon. OSU is vastly more talented. However, I expect the weather to be a factor and Nebraska to put up a fight at home.

Ohio State 38 Nebraska 24

SMU -7.5 at South Florida – I don’t love this game. I just need to keep riding the SMU cover train (currently 4-0 ATS) until they stumble.

SMU  37 South Florida 27

Texas A&M -23 vs. Arkansas – A&M is the best 2-2 team in the country. Arkansas might be the worst 2-2 team.

Texas A&M 41 Arkansas 17

Washington -10 vs. USC – The Trojans have been really doing well given their decimated QB situation. I think they have a letdown week after upending #10 Utah last week.

Washington 35 USC 24

UCLA +6.5 at Arizona – Does the crazy 32 point comeback win against Washington State provide a turnaround opportunity for Chip Kelly’s team? I say, yes.

UCLA 37 Arizona 34

Season ATS record: 18-18
