Fool’s Gold?

I got a confession to make. I am a traditionalist who loves when the old school titans of yesteryear are thriving at the top of college football. Call me too nostalgic, but I love it when the teams that dominated in the 70’s-90’s are back on top. Obviously, the television networks love this as well. Where I run into issues are when I apply my memory of glory days gone by to the modern day world of sports gambling. When Notre Dame and Michigan play, I can’t help but envisioning Raghib “Rocket” Ismail and Desmond Howard streaking down the sideline. I guarantee, a subliminal part of me that is placing a wager on them is influenced by fond memories of that brand of dominance and success. To this day, I feel partial to wagering on these former powerhouses. However, I am getting fed up. Stop playing with my emotions. It is time to produce. Every year I think Jim Harbaugh and company can finally win that big game. I keep waiting for the next Charles White or Reggie Bush to emerge out of USC. Joe Montana might not be running down that tunnel in South Bend anytime soon, but maybe Ian Book can help them finally not lay an egg when it matters. My patience is running thin and it is time to see some results. This week will give some of these teams some great opportunities to make me and other “traditionalists” happy.

I squeaked by with another winning week last week. I am looking forward to getting over the hump on the plus side of .500. Let’s see what the card looks like this week and try for our third winning week in a row.

USC +4 vs. Utah – Clay Helton, it is now or never. Your job is truly on the line. 10th ranked Utes are coming to town. Utah blew out BYU and USC lost to them in overtime. What does that mean? Nothing. I am going with the upset.

USC 30 Utah 24

Air Force +8.5 vs. Boise State – I think this is going to be a tight game. Air Force has impressed me this year and Boise is still breaking in a freshman QB.

Boise State 30 Air Force 27

Pittsburgh +11 vs. Central Florida – Kenny Pickett is an underrated QB. Central Florida is clearly the more talented team, but I think they get a scare from an ACC team that desperately needs a signature win.

Central Florida 34 Pittsburgh 27

Miami Florida -29.5 vs. Central Michigan – Central Michigan’s QB is out. I don’t think they will reach double digit points against this Miami D. Fear Shaquille Quarterman, CMU.

Miami 42 Central Michigan 7

Michigan +3.5 at Wisconsin – Sticking my neck out and predicting Shea Patterson struggles in the first half and we finally get to see Dylan McCaffrey unleashed to escape Camp Randall with a win.

Michigan 24 Wisconsin 23

Missouri -8.5 vs. South Carolina – I got a feeling this is going to be a tough year for the Gamecocks. Kelly Bryant will have a great game and Mizzou rolls to a home victory.

Missouri 37 South Carolina 24

Appalachian State +2.5 at UNC – Red Alert! In the minds of the squares, the Tarheels should be at least an 8 point favorite. Vegas is begging you to take UNC. I smell this from a mile away.

UNC 30 Appalachian State 28

SMU +9.5 at TCU – Shane Buechele, a Texas transfer, continues to make SMU a covering machine. TCU will be a very tough task, but I plan to ride the Mustangs until the wheels fall off.

TCU 31 SMU 24

Georgia -14.5 vs. Notre Dame – You all saw Louisville run up and down the field on Notre Dame, right? Now envision them trying to stop the stable of UGA running backs. No chance.

Georgia 38 Notre Dame 21

Season ATS record: 13-14
