Calm Before the Storm

Let’s face it, when the best game ESPN College GameDay can come up with is Iowa vs. Iowa State you know it is slim pickings this weekend. Sure, there are some mid-level intriguing matchups like UNC at Wake Forest, Arizona State at Michigan State and Florida State at Virginia, but the real stuff is coming like a freight train in the weeks ahead. I look at this week as the calming before the storm. This is the week where teams get their stuff in order to ensure by week 4 they are running on all cylinders. This is the time to get the kinks out and get ready for the big boys to collide. Next week, we will have Michigan-Wisconsin, Auburn-A&M, Notre Dame-Georgia and Utah-USC. That is what you call a good weekend of football. So for this week, sit back and relax and wait for the suspense that will hit us next week.

Heisman Update:

Two players emerged on the Heisman scene last week. LSU QB Joe Burrow and Purdue WR Rondale Moore. Moore had 220 yards receiving and 13 catches in the win against Vanderbilt. Burrow continues to stay hot with a win at Texas.

Here are my Top 5 Heisman rankings:

1 – Joe Burrow – QB, LSU

2 – Jalen Hurts – QB, Oklahoma

3 – Tua Tagovailoa – QB, Alabama

4 – Jonathan Taylor – RB, Wisconsin

5 – Justin Fields – QB, Ohio State

After a rough week 1 filled with some brutally close ATS losses, I got back on the winning track last week with a winning week. I am looking to continue that trend this week. I am going with my lucky number 11 this week and picking 11 games (Incidentally, if you are ever on a roulette table at the casino, ride 11 black, it has always worked for me). Hop on the train for some winning picks this week.

UNC +3 vs. Wake Forest – Mack Brown is certainly getting off to a hot start in his second stint with the Tarheels. I like freshman QB Sam Howell in a shootout.

UNC 38 Wake Forest 34

Washington State -9.5 at Houston – Mike Leach is the best. Wazzu QB Anthony Gordon is on fire with an 81% completion percentage. Houston won’t be able to stop him.

Washington State 45 Houston 31

Indiana +17.5 vs. Ohio State – IU QB Michael Penix is a game-time decision but Peyton Ramsey is as good a backup as there is, so I look for Indiana to give OSU some trouble in this closer than expected game.

Ohio State 37 Indiana 24

West Virginia +6.5 vs. NC State – WVU got manhandled last week. However, this week they are at home and struggling QB’s tend to find their way against the Wolfpack’s suspect secondary. The Pack haven’t played anyone yet and this is their first real test of the year. I expect a last minute field goal as the difference in this one.

NC State 24 West Virginia 21

Temple +7 vs. Maryland – The Terps are on fire and everyone loves them. What does that mean? The squares will be all over them. This spread is suspect, at best. This will be a high scoring game that will be decided by less than a touchdown.

Maryland 34 Temple 30

Air Force +4 at Colorado – Whatever I just said about Maryland, apply it here. The Buffs had an amazing come from behind win against Nebraska in overtime. Emotional letdown coming. Air Force is tricky with that option. Colorado does just enough to win by a slight margin but does not cover.

Colorado 30 Air Force 28

Stanford +8.5 vs. Central Florida – KJ Costello is back for the Cardinal. Will that be enough to pull out a victory? Not unless he can play defense, too. However, it will be enough for Stanford to stay close in this game.

Central Florida 34 Stanford 27

BYU +4.5 vs. USC – USC’s Kedon Slovis is doing a great job taking over for JT Daniels. I think Zach Wilson keeps BYU in this thing and they keep it very close at home.

USC 28 BYU 27

Iowa State +2.5 vs. Iowa – Iowa is the better team here, but due to it being in Ames and College GameDay coming to town, I think the Cyclones and Brock Purdy do an old fashioned backdoor cover with a late TD.

Iowa State 24 Iowa 20

SMU -17.5 vs. Texas State – I have been riding the Mustangs and Shane Buechele every week and I am not stopping now. Surprise team of the year in college football.

SMU 42 Texas State 21

Virginia -7.5 vs. Florida State – Cam Akers aside, FSU is trash. This UVA team is going to challenge for the ACC Coastal title. Taggart better step it up or this will be his last year in Tallahassee.

Virginia 34 Florida State 23

Season ATS record: 7-9
