As we come to the halfway point of the college football season one thing is certain, the football landscape is what we thought it would be. There has not been any wild surprises and the teams that figured to be in contention are still right in the mix. The usual suspects (Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and Georgia) are leading the way.
In a lot of ways, I do not see the second half of the season drastically changing that landscape. Outside of these four teams, the other teams that have a viable shot seem to be Notre Dame, Washington, Michigan and Penn State. As far as the Heisman, it is Tua’s to lose. I would really like to see how he plays in a big game where Bama gets challenged a bit. I could see Dwayne Haskins challenging him, if and when OSU starts to turn things up a notch. This is why the second half of the season is a lot more fun. A lot more meaningful games and people start to emerge as Heisman favorites. I’m looking forward to a great, but yet maybe predictable, second half of the season. Crossing my fingers for an eight team playoff in the future.
After going 6-1 in last week’s picks, let’s see if we can keep up the pace with some winners for this week. I am feeling lucky again this week. My lucky number is 11, so let’s go with 11 games. I think that many of these will be against public perception, but that isn’t always a bad thing. It’s good to be different, especially when you are winning!
Virginia +6.5 vs. Miami – This line seems a bit shady. Everyone still seems to love Miami, especially with their new QB. They snuck by a sub-par FSU. UVA is a team that is improving from recent years. I think they give Miami a test.
Miami 24 Virginia 20
South Carolina +2.5 vs. Texas A&M – The Gamecocks had a few disappointing games this year. Jake Bentley returns this week and this game is in Columbia. I think this will be a very close game that South Carolina pulls out in the end.
South Carolina 26 Texas A&M 24
Notre Dame -20.5 vs. Pitt – Pitt played a great game and upset Syracuse last week. Is the team that beat Georgia Tech and Cuse going to show up or the team that got annihilated by Penn State and Central Florida? My vote is the latter.
Notre Dame 42 Pitt 17
Ohio State -29.5 vs. Minnesota – OSU is going to feast on freshman Zack Annexstad. The second half of the season always means the Buckeyes start turning it up a notch. We will see backup quarterback Tate Martell early in this one.
Ohio State 45 Minnesota 14
Iowa State +6.5 vs. West Virginia – Tricky spot for the Mountaineers. I think the Cyclones catch them sleeping and put a scare into WVU and Will Grier. RB David Montgomery will need to play (currently questionable) for ISU to have a shot at the upset.
West Virginia 34 Iowa State 30
Memphis +4.5 vs. Central Florida – Can Central Florida go undefeated AGAIN?! Nope. Time for a stumble. Memphis will be rocking and I predict an upset in a very high scoring game.
Memphis 45 Central Florida 42
Alabama -27.5 vs. Missouri – Who on Earth spots Drew Lock four touchdowns? Bama. Look for Tua to tear the Mizzou defense apart. Drew might be on the NFL’s radar, but he gets outplayed in this one by a mile.
Alabama 52 Missouri 23
Vanderbilt +7 vs. Florida – The Commodores played Notre Dame to a 22-17 game. When they show up, they are a tough out. Florida is still feeling the warm fuzzies from their win against LSU. I think they get caught for a bit, but correct just enough to win but not cover.
Florida 28 Vanderbilt 23
Washington -3 at Oregon – This game should be a great one. Washington has handled the Ducks the last few years. Oregon is a much better team now than they have been. I think it comes down the the Husky defense being better than Oregon’s D. Washington wins a close one.
Washington 31 Oregon 27
Michigan -9.5 vs. Wisconsin – Jim Harbaugh is 1-8 against Top 15 teams since 2016 (0 for his last 6). But times, they are a changin. The Wolverines have the best defense in football and their offense has scored at least 40 points in 4 of their last 5 games. They won’t score that much against the Badgers, but they will bottle up Jonathan Taylor just enough to pull out a 10 point win.
Michigan 27 Wisconsin 17
Georgia -7 at LSU – If I am a Georgia fan, going into Death Valley scares me. This will be an extremely close game for 3 quarters. I just think the Bulldogs have too many offensive weapons for the Tigers to keep them down for 4 quarters. I think Fromm and the UGA running backs are the difference. I smell a late game backdoor cover here.
Georgia 33 LSU 20
