The Dogs Are Barking Again: Week 5 College Football Picks

We are a month into the college football season and this is the time of the year where things start to get interesting. The playoff picture starts to take shape and people start looking at rankings a little more closely to see if their team has a chance to sneak into the top 4 for a shot at the national title. The Heisman favorites start to emerge. A great player can get away with one or two early sub-par games. As we head into October, that player better be putting up some big numbers in prime time or their chance at the trophy will disappear. Another thing that starts to happen this time of the year are upsets. Lots of them. It’s time for the dogs to once again start barking. This week, I will focus on which dogs will earn us some money. Some will win, some might not. Most will do what is more important than winning or losing. They will cover!
Let’s see what dogs will have the most bite. Woof!

South Carolina +1.5 at Kentucky – Kentucky is 4-0 and playing a big game at home. Both of these teams are legit top 25 teams. The Wildcats can only have good things in basketball. Having long-term success and luck in football is just not seemingly allowed. The Football Gods have spoken.
 South Carolina 26 Kentucky 23

Stanford +6 at Notre Dame – The Cardinal escaped with a wacky OT win last week against Oregon. I still think the Irish are a bit overrated, but I do like the move to Ian Book at QB. Stanford has better skill position players. I think they make a difference this week and they escape South Bend with an upset win.
Stanford 30 Notre Dame 28

California +2 vs. Oregon – Cal’s program is turning the corner this year. Oregon’s coaching staff handed themselves an undeserved loss by trying to run the ball in the waning seconds against Stanford when they should have taken a knee. I think this loss sticks with them and it will take them a few weeks to recover. An inspired Bears team scores an upset over the emotionally drained Ducks.
California 31 Oregon 30

Mississippi +10.5 at LSU – Sure Mississippi got undressed by Bama. Who doesn’t take a beatdown from Bama these days? Ed Orgeron is doing a fantastic job with the Tigers this year. Everyone knows everything doesn’t come this easy for LSU. Sooner or later, a letdown is bound to happen. My guess is that their eyes have been on the media instead of their opponent (watching too much ESPN). They will do enough to win, but not cover.
LSU 34 Mississippi 27

Arizona +3.5 vs. USC – It has been a bumpy start for Kevin Sumlin and Khalil Tate. They are starting to settle in and they are improving each week. JT Daniels is a true freshman who will be up and down all season. I expect this game to be a very close game. I’ll take the home team getting the points.
USC 34 Arizona 31

Texas Tech +3.5 vs. West Virginia – Kliff Kingsbury is FINALLY starting to get his team to play for him. Will Grier has yet another opportunity to put up some impressive stats. Can the Red Raiders really turn the corner? A win here would do a ton for the program. A loss for WVU might hurt Grier’s Heisman campaign. Should be a shootout.
Texas Tech 38 West Virginia 34

Kansas State +8.5 vs. Texas – I have been riding Texas lately. They certainly seem to be really playing well. The Wildcats have had a miserable year. This game being posted in single digits only leads me to believe one thing – The Wizard will find a way to keep his team competitive.
Texas 27 Kansas State 23

Penn State +3.5 vs. Ohio State – Saquon gone? No problem. The Nittany Lions have Miles Sanders who ran for 200 yards last week. Two of the nation’s best quarterbacks will be showcasing their skills for Heisman consideration. White Out, 7:30pm game, Urban back for OSU. The fans will have all day to tailgate. Happy Valley will be rocking….
Penn State 38 Ohio State 33

Old Dominion +7 at East Carolina – ODU loses to Liberty, Florida International and Charlotte. Then, they beat Virginia Tech. ECU beat UNC, but that means nothing. ECU really needs this win because there might only be one other potential win on their schedule this year. Pirates squeak by but do not cover.
East Carolina 34 Old Dominion 30
