Can Any David Beat This Goliath? Week 4 College Football Picks

Alabama has won five national championships since 2009. That is a pretty dominant decade. Scary part is, the machine keeps getting better. They currently have the best quarterback at Bama since Kenny Stabler and Joe Namath (yes, Tua is better than Jay Barker and AJ McCarron). They have always won with dominating defenses and stellar running games. Now they have a QB that can stretch the field with his legs and arm. That, coupled with numerous 5 star players sprinkled all over the field is a scary proposition.

Can anyone beat this juggernaut? Clemson and Georgia might be able to sneak up on them on their best day and Bama’s worst. However, when both teams are firing on all cylinders, Bama is just too talented. For example, the Golden Nugget in Vegas has posted Bama as a favorite over every possible contender by 9.5 points or more. To be a double digit favorite against the top four challengers to the national title is pretty telling as to what type of team Bama has right now. For example, Clemson had to scratch and claw to slip by Texas A&M a few weeks ago. Bama is a 25.5 point favorite over A&M this week!

Here are the odds the Golden Nugget has posted this week:

  • Alabama -9.5 vs. Ohio State
  • Alabama -10.5 vs. Georgia
  • Alabama -11.5 vs. Clemson
  • Alabama -14.5 vs. Oklahoma

Time will tell if this dominance will continue. For the sake of parity, I hope other teams can catch up to make things more interesting. As for now, Bama is the clear cut favorite to repeat as champs. I have them continuing to crush the opposition this week.

Check below for my pick on their game, along with a few other winners for this weekend.

Alabama -25.5 vs. Texas A&M – A&M scared Clemson a few weeks ago. Cherish that game Aggie fans, because you are about to get steamrolled by the best team in the country. Tua puts up 4 TD’s and throws for over 250 yards.
Alabama 45 Texas A&M 17

UNC +3.5 vs. Pittsburgh – Larry Fedora better show something quick. His boys have been more successful at selling shoes than playing football. Pressure is on. Pitt is coming off a great win against Georgia Tech. I think the team that lost by 45 to Penn State shows up and the Tarheels get their first win of the year.
UNC 24 Pittsburgh 20

Marshall +4.5 vs. NC State – Both teams are coming off a canceled game last week due to the hurricane. This game should have a lot of scoring and the last team with the ball should win a close one. I am going with the more experienced quarterback, Ryan Finley. Pack wins, Marshall covers.
NC State 31 Marshall 28

Texas +3 vs. TCU – Tom Herman is finally starting to turn this ship around at Texas. After a disappointing week 1 loss to Maryland, they are on the mend. TCU is coming off a hard fought, emotional loss to Ohio State. Home field advantage wins this one.
Texas 24 TCU 23

Vanderbilt +2.5 vs. South Carolina – I know Vandy almost beat Notre Dame, but I truly think South Carolina should be favored by 8 points here. The only reason I am taking the Commodores is that I think this is a trap set by Vegas. This line smells worse than the garbage on NYC sidewalks on a 100 degree summer day.
South Carolina 28 Vanderbilt 27

Kansas +7 at Baylor – The Jayhawks are on fire with a TWO game win streak! Baylor got manhandled by an upstart Duke team last week. Both teams are rebuilding from 1-11 seasons last year. This game will be more competitive than people think.
Baylor 30 Kansas 27

Washington -17.5 vs. Arizona State – The Husky defense is tough as nails and their offense is going to start moving this week. After a disappointing cross-country loss to Auburn opening weekend, Washington seems like a team on a mission to run the table.
Washington 38 Arizona State 17

Minnesota +1.5 vs. Maryland – I am a big P.J. Fleck fan. He’s got the Gophers headed in the right direction. Maryland started off on fire and their bubble bursted last week. Back to being in disarray. Carry on…
Minnesota 27 Maryland 23

INDIANA +4.5 vs. Michigan State – (see Vandy game)
Michigan State 24 Indiana 21
