With the first week of the college football season in the books, it’s important to not overreact to results from week 1. Teams have plenty of chances to prove themselves in the next 3 months. Let’s take a look at a few sides we like in week 2.
Georgia Tech -3 vs. USF
Georgia Tech heads on the road to take on an USF team coming off a strong 2017 season. Teams that can run the ball are often good to back on the road since its easier to run the ball away from home then it is to pass. GT is a triple option offense and will be doing a lot of running this weekend. USF has struggled with the triple option the last few years against both Tulane and Navy and GT brings a lot more athletes to the offense than those schools do. I like the Yellow Jackets to take care of this one and cover the spread.
Cal +3 vs. BYU
Folks are high on BYU after last week’s upset of Arizona but don’t let the final score fool you. BYU was not great in the game against AZ as AZ was still figuring things out with a new coach and a new style of offense. Meanwhile, Cal seemed to pick up where they left off handling UNC in their first win of the season. Cal has the better athletes, a better coach, and is getting points here so I’ll roll with the Bears in this one.
Iowa State +4 vs. Iowa
Last week I watched NIU take on this Iowa team and this is another game where the final score of 33-7 was very deceiving. Iowa couldn’t block NIU’s defense all game and this was a close game until Iowa pulled away late. I expect Iowa to have trouble again blocking the Cyclones defense, however, the Cyclones bring something that NIU could not to the table which is offense. Last year this was a very close game and I expect another close one this year which is why I’m grabbing the points with Iowa State here.
Bowling Green +16.5 vs. Maryland
Here is a classic spot where Maryland gets a huge win against Texas and now has to go on the road to face a team that will be hard for them to get up for in Bowling Green. Meanwhile Bowling green struggled against Oregon’s potent offense last week but they were able to put up points in that game which is a good sign here. We have this line closer to 12 points in our power numbers, but due to a bit of an overreaction from last week you are catching some value here on the Falcons so I’ll roll with them to cover the spread here at home.
Arizona +4 vs. Houston
Arizona suffered a bad loss last week against BYU, but I attribute much of that to the new coach and new coordinators getting used to calling plays for the dynamic Tate. Last week was pretty pathetic as they called almost no QB runs and threw way too much but I look for the Wildcats to get back to what worked last year with a lot more read option and QB runs called this week. Arizona has the players to get the job done here and win the game so I’ll gladly take the 4 points being offered up here and roll with my Cats!
